In a Nutshell

We are a global social enterprise that pioneers sustainable agriculture and empowers smallholder farmers to lift themselves out of poverty.

We are one of the largest organic and fairtrade fruit exporters in Latin America, and we partner with farmers from all over the world. We deliver sustainably grown, healthy produce for every country in Europe, and for the United States.

Our field offices provide tailored support to even the smallest subsistence growers who can not yet participate in the Fairtrade program. Through our award-winning Three Tier Development Model, we help smallholders become certified organic agro-entrepreneurs who can produce for global markets, and after a period of transition, succeed without external support.

We are also the co-founders of Blooom International. Blooom is a unique tech platform designed with and for smallholders. It enables precision farming on the smallest plot of land, anywhere in the world, and provides risk assessment, credit scoring, and direct market connections for farmers. By partnering with farmer cooperatives as well as with companies and NGOs that work with farmers, we can boost the adoption of sustainable best practices, and increase the yields and incomes of smallholder farmers around the globe.

Our Story

Our story started with a personal revelation and a bold decision. Our founder, Patrick Struebi has travelled in developing countries for several years as an executive at the world’s largest commodities trading firm. Gradually, he has seen more and more of how conventional business practices and market dynamics can be unfair and harmful to vulnerable communities and ecologies.

In 2004, observing the working conditions at one of their partners’ in Peru, he felt that he had arrived at a crossroads. He had to make a choice between aggravating the injustices that he had seen, or leaving his career and working to change the way business is done. He decided to quit his job in Switzerland, sold his belongings, and dedicated his life to social entrepreneurship.

Having a personal impression of the enormous challenges that smallholders had faced in Latin America, and convinced that his expertise in international trade could improve farmers’ lives, he founded Fairtrasa, short for Fairtrade South America. Our company was incorporated in Mexico in 2005 — the same year, we shipped the world’s first fairtrade avocados.

We have soon expanded to other countries across the continent, pioneering fairtrade, organic agriculture and social innovation through our Three Tier Development Model. In 2008, Patrick has been elected an Ashoka Fellow, and in the years that followed, Fairtrasa’s unique impact has been acknowledged with a series of additional distinctions from the World Economic Forum, the Schwab Foundation and others.

During the subsequent decade, technology has disrupted a series of large industries. It has become clear that new avenues have opened up for us to increase our impact. At the same time, we have seen a worsening of the twin crises of the food system and the environment. While Fairtrasa has reached more farmers and sold more organic fruit than we had hoped when we started, the global challenge compelled us to look for solutions on a much larger scale.

Inspired by Uber and AirBnB, Patrick has become interested in systemic change solutions in the global food supply chain through disruptive technologies that could empower smallholders. By reaching millions of farmers through an app that helps them achieve higher yields with a lighter footprint on the environment, the entire food system could become more sustainable.

Patrick found a key ally in another Ashoka Fellow, Krishna Mishra, a serial innovator known for technological solutions that empowered marginalized rural communities. Together, they have developed Blooom, a fully integrated AgTech platform designed with and for smallholders, founded on a novel co-creation model that aligned key stakeholders in the food system. In 2018, the release of Blooom became another significant milestone in the company’s history of social innovation.

As we enter into new partnerships and the adoption of the platform is increasing, the Fairtrasa Group stands on the doorstep of increasing its impact exponentially, across three continents.

We are

committed to

social impact

We exist to sustainably promote the economic and social development of all smallholder farmers. Farmers of every development stage are our equal partners in business.

sustainable agriculture

We care about the way our food is grown. We work with organic and biodynamic farms who grow with a low climate impact, using ecological methods and environmentally friendly inputs.

quality

Our supply and sales offices ensure that only produce of the highest quality arrive to the market. We are dedicated to excellence in our services to our suppliers and clients.

fair prices

We honor both the people who feed the world with healthy food, and our customers who make our work possible. We maintain fair, yet highly competitive pricing by removing intermediaries, and operating a vertically integrated business structure.

innovation

We are constantly looking for new approaches and opportunities to increase our impact on farmers’ lives.

co-creation

No one can solve global challenges alone. We are ready to share our experience, know-how and tools with those who are open to innovation, and to work with other organizations and individuals for sustainability and smallholder impact.

encouraging local leaders and empowering women

We require that the smallholder farmers that we work with are trained, financed, and supported by a local team that they trust, and that their own independent leadership is constantly encouraged. We also promote women to take on leading positions in their cooperatives and communities.

being a caring global citizen

We are dedicated to being a successful social business that maintains integrity, honesty, and a genuine concern for people, communities, and the environment.
