2. There is a solution - but it is being misused

  • There are farming practices that can draw down atmospheric carbon and use it to
    • enrich soil life
    • increase crop quality
    • heal ecosystems and
    • restore long-term productivity
  • They are called regenerative agriculture. Studies estimate that when they are adopted widely, croplands and pastures may sequester over 13 of the roughly 50 gigatons of CO2 that the world economy emits each year.
  • Such a compelling concept was always bound to be misused. Many companies adopted a few of these practices as window dressing, allowing them to claim that they are regenerative — while largely continuing with the same industrialized methods.
  • The new challenge for our industry was to develop a system through which farmers could prove that they are practicing true regeneration that is healing their soils, ecosystems, and the planet.
What is Regenerative Agriculture?

3. Creating the highest standard

  • In 2017, regenerative pioneers, including organic farmers, ranchers, and experts in soil health and animal welfare founded the Regenerative Organic Alliance.
  • This non-profit created the food industry’s most rigorous, outcome-based, all-encompassing certification program.
  • The program not only verifies soil health and biodiversity, but also ensures the ethical and humane treatment of animals, as well as fairness for farmers & workers.
  • To be considered for Regenerative Organic Certified® (ROC™) status, growers and companies must already have organic and fair trade certifications.

In addition to that, they have to prove year by year that they

  • Source all inputs from the farm or from the area – no industrial inputs allowed, even if organic
  • Pay living wages
  • Keep increasing soil organic matter
  • Stimulate biodiversity
  • Protect water systems
  • Offer good working conditions

And much more.

A WIN-WIN-WIN FOR ALL

Businesses

  • are able to offer the highest standard of sustainability to their customers
  • source from growers that ship higher quality more consistently, despite increasingly extreme weather
  • find it easier to reach their environmental targets, as regenerative farms have smaller carbon footprints, or are carbon neutral or carbon negative

Consumers

  • eat the healthiest, most nutrient rich fruit that can be grown
  • rest assured that they support the highest standard for environmental stewardship and social fairness

Everyone contributes to our common future
